History
The Rape of the Elf-maid
There was once a beautiful elven maid by the name of Viredesia Tal'arin. She belonged to a band of elven gypsies who would travel from city to city, performing and enticing crowds with their exotic nature. Yet fate glowered upon her one day as the band arrived at a small, rural village close to dusk. The gypsies' arrival was well-noted by the villagers, unused to such sights. And by chance, Viredesia had caught the eye of a dark and rugged young human. He watched her closely, and as she returned to the gypsies' camp for the night, he waylaid her and by force robbed her of her purity.
By daybreak, the gypsies, being a mysterious and secretive lot, had vanished along with Viredesia, before any locals had the chance to ask questions about the misdeed. The wrong done to her, however, was not quickly forgotten, as it was soon learned that Viredesia was with child. She later gave birth to a son of mixed human and elven blood. Insisting that he be accepted as a part of the clan, she named the child Arsicas, and on the date of his second birthday, he was marked with the symbol of the scorpion--the sign which had been present in the rising stars on the eve of his birth.
The Boy of Mixed Blood
The child grew quickly, an indication of the human blood he possessed. He was taught the ways of the gypsies, joining them in performing songs, tricks, and street magic. They continued to travel the countryside, and the young child saw and learned much on their journeys. Yet as he grew older, Arsicas felt a pang for the places of legend, of Eal-Deliah, the ancient home of the elves, and of Elvandar, the new center of elven knowledge. He wished to see for himself if these places from elven lore were real as he had been told. He longed, too, to reconnect with his elven past, for he felt all too well the differences between him and the other members of his clan. His time was finite, and he wished to see all that he could of the world.
After bidding goodbye to his mother and the other members of his clan, he made his way to the coast and found a ship destined for Forostar. The journey was long and toilsome, but in time he disembarked at the docks of Naarved, finding his way to nearby Elvandar, a city as splendid as the tales spoke of.
The Wandering Gypsy
Arsicas took in the sights of Elvandar and accustomed himself to its ways. He earned what money he could performing tricks and juggling at the marketplace. To his fascination, he found that the tales of old were more than just tales, that the gods, in fact, held influence over the people, imparting their clerics with mystical power. He learned, too, of the dangers of the deathpriests, which he would later come to witness firsthand. He took up the sword in efforts to combat the plague of the greenskins, earning the bounty placed upon their heads. And after months in Elvandar, he became a citizen, turning away from his wandering roots.
Yet he still felt the need to venture farther and explore this new land, coming upon the city of Arborea, home of the humans to the south. More crude than Elvandar, this place still had much to offer, particularly its guilds dedicated to the arts and crafts. Arsicas joined the skalds, already familiar with music and performance from his gypsy heritage. He began to earn money playing in local taverns.
The Student of Magic
As he learned more about his new surroundings and continued his training, a curiosity began to grow within Arsicas about the forces of magic which he had heard some wielded. What magic he himself knew were mere tricks, but he had seen the force wielded by clerics and heard the rumors of sorcerers and mages who possessed other kinds of power. He soon became acquainted with members of the Scribes who, through years of study, were able to learn the magic of scrolls. The idea compelled him to join the Scribes himself as a student of Glorfindel.
Arsicas began his study, which proved an arduous task, yet his fascination drew him onward, inquiring of other Master Scribes what he could. To complement his work, he joined the craftsman guilds of the parchmentmakers and boodbinders and worked steadily to improve his skills, eventually taking on tanning as well. His days became filled with study, work, and his continual rounds to the taverns, performing before the crowds.
The Goddess of Love
Arsicas had become accustomed to his new life and had met many of all different types of backgrounds. Rangers, Scribes, clerics, Crusaders, Shaolin: Forostar was home to all these, each with their own views. Some had asked of him what his own views were, if he followed a god or goddess, though, despite his interest in a few, he had yet to devote himself to one in particular.
This changed though when he accompanied his companions Sharpe and Vuur to the shrine dedicated to Gwen in the Giat foothills. There was little convincing required on the Gwennites' parts to get Arsicas to taste of the golden fruit which hung temptingly from the vibrant tree planted there. One taste of this fruit and Arsicas was overpowered by the immense serenity of pure love. He would return time and again to the shrine, eventually dedicating himself as a follower of Gwen. As he grew deeper in the faith, he would come to indulge himself in more of life's pleasures, seeking to experience the bounty the world had to offer in every way he could.
